Farmville, VA: High Bridge Trail

Updated: Aug 14, 2020

Over 30 miles of trail for biking, horseback riding or walking on a former railroad bed traverses three counties in Central Virginia. The highlight of the trail is its namesake, found just outside Farmville. The historic High Bridge crosses the Appomattox River and offers quite a view. The bridge itself is .45 miles long and is the longest pedestrian bridge in Virginia. Benches and side overlooks are located on the bridge so you can stop without disrupting others using the trail.

There are various access points along the trail, which are listed on the website below. The town of Farmville hosts a Virginia Loveworks sign with a High Bridge theme, so be sure to stop for a picture if you access the trail through the town area or nearby. The town itself is home to the infamous Green Front Furniture company as well as a charming downtown area and restaurants. You can truly make a day trip out of an excursion to the bike trail.

If your family isn't ready for the entire 31 mile trail, parking is available 1 mile from the bridge at River Road (555 River Road). This parking lot does have a $5 fee. Restrooms are also available at this parking lot. There is signage describing the trail and other area attractions. This is the perfect distance for younger children to manage and for any member of your family to manage on foot, in a stroller or other mobility device.

This bridge will be a big hit with your little ones, be sure to bring your camera.
